What a fabulous day we had on Thursday. There were many smiles as one by one the surprises were revealed.

The Stonefields School staff spent considerable time dialoguing and discussing the necessary dispositions needed for the future. This dialogue was an important one as we wanted to create a shared language that is reinforced throughout the School to actively build each learners Capacity to learn. This dialogue lasted over a number of days and we are pleased with the outcome. There are seven competencies that will be intentional explored and taught to ensure our learners know what to do when they don't know what to do.

They are;
Be determined – push through when the going gets tough
Wonder – to image and be creative
Reflect – Think about my thinking and about how I might improve, what I might do differently next time
Connect – Make connections
Question – Ask questions
Se Self Aware – Grow an understanding of how I best learn, what my strengths are
Think – grow thinking skills and tools to solve problems and make informed decisions

One of our teachers spent the day videoing learners to capture their thoughts about what makes a good learner a good learner. From our baseline we can see we have some work to do. Having interviewed hundreds of students using similar questions the responses are quite disturbing as often children will say ‘I don’t know’, ‘pick up rubbish’, ‘do what the teacher says’, ‘sit quietly on the mat’, and ‘listen’. Deep and engaging learning is not about being passive or being good, it is about engaging and knowing what to do when you are stuck in your learning. We look forward to focusing deeply in the next few weeks on ensuring our learners understand more deeply what it is to be an effective learner.

Learning - The bottom line!

There has been lots of dialogue amongst staff in the last week or so about how to cause/activate learning and ensure as Guy Claxton so beautifully puts it 'get as much learning juice possible out'.
The learning design is two fold or better termed split screen. The design of the workshop (small group) teaching session where as much (sweet) juice as possible is packed into the experience so that the potential for gaining the goodness from the juice squeezed out. Graeme Atkin's question "How do I know my students need this learning at this time" is a superb question and has been asked many times as we reflect, critique and think about how learning is going to be designed and activated at Stonefields School.
The other side of the screen is ensuring learners are involved in worthwhile, rigorous learning experiences when not involved in a workshop with a teacher. Our inquiry/learning model is proving powerful at helping us design learning at stages beyond building knowledge. The thinking required to make meaning and apply understandings is what we want students to be involved in to develop the necessary thinking and powerful learning skills.

Exciting times - the journey is a privilege.

There was certainly lots of 'Thinking Big and Being Brave' happening at our staff retreat. Some incredibly powerful thinking occurred as we collaborated together to make meaning and develop a collective understanding of our Core Business 'LEARNING'. We worked through a process of defining what learning will be like at Stonefields School.
“Learning is a dynamic, fulfilling process of actively building on what we know; by questioning, thinking and connecting to make meaning, expand knowledge and deepen understandings.”
The understanding of our vision becomes richer, deeper and fuller as together we have further unpacked the learning we would like to see caused and activated at Stonefields School. It became very apparent,very quickly just how talented, committed and enthusiastic our staff are as we brainstormed how the learning hubs are going to function. Our students and their families are in for a treat.
We are ready to open and getting more excited as we move closer towards our grand opening 3 February.

Here is a wee story we created as an exemplar for our own students. The team went to Melbourne to view some wonderful Schools. We had a superb two days looking at how three schools had worked through a process to purposefully design space. We saw over 100 students working within one learning centre. The engaged learning hum was exceptional, it was wonderful to see students using various e learning tools and being encouraged to pursue areas of interest. Many thanks to all the schools that hosted us.
Mel then took us on a tour of the city on Saturday. We had a great time exploring some of the sights of Melbourne. We are keen for Stonefields School learners to take Mel with them when they go on trips around NZ and further afield. Maybe we will be able to start blog on Where in the world is Mel off to now?

Last night we had an information evening for interested applicants to come along and hear more about the School's direction. We received the official seal of approval from the Ministry of Education today to change the school name from Mt Wellington to Stonefields School. We have worked through a consultation process over the last month to give our community the opportunity to make submissions about the possible name change.

After returning from Jasmax, our Architects this morning I am reminded of what a privileged position it is to dream and scheme about possibilities for classroom/school design, from the ground up. I am constantly having to challenge traditional mental models about how things have always been in school. Take the traditional big librarian counter for example, portraying a 'fort Knox' scenario of please don't enter! One of the most exciting parts is thinking about how classroom spaces might be furnished to cater for various learning scenarios and preferences.

I was told recently that a trillion dollars is spent on education a year across OECD countries. The scary reality is there has been no significant change in educational outcomes for students in 60 years. This would suggest more of the same is not the answer. Thinking 'different' perhaps is! How do we maximise the evidence highlighted in John Hattie's recent Visible Learning meta analysis, about what works? What actually has an impact on student outcomes? How do we design learning to take into consideration opportunities where students self grade (1.4 effect size) and provide opportunities for rich feedback to be integrated into everyday learning.
With this in mind I am currently grappling with what impact does the traditional school design have on student outcomes if any. How do you flip the traditional on it's head and create the new, what might be possible? I am in a privileged position currently thinking about how one might design learning environments/spaces to ensure that learning experiences, opportunities and student autonomy is increased. Has the traditional classroom contributed to the no change in student outcomes?
More questions than answers as I sit and scribble how multiple learning zones and spaces might be organised/ furnished to maximise student ownership and autonomy and ultimately increased student outcomes.

I took a ride out to Baverstock Oaks and Mission Heights School this morning to have a look at two of Aucklands recently built schools. They certainly are impressive and on first impressions quite a contrast from schools built even a decade ago. The questions I have are; is the teaching and learning congruent with the 21st century design? What mental models potentially constrain teachers and need to be challenged? How are the learning spaces set up to meet a variety of learning situations e.g one on one, small group, large group, peer learning opportunities.

Returned this evening from a session with Ministry of Education representatives, Principals, Architects and Construction representatives to look at the design of Mt Wellington School to date. A significant session in that input precedes the signing off of the master plan. It was timely and refreshing to hear questions from the floor, particularly from a colleague who has lived the same experience in the last 2 years. Practical suggestions about bench height in the hall kitchen, recycling options and the amount of wet space, all import reminders about the thought that needs to take place pre building. Some further dreaming and scheming to come!

21st Century Learning Spaces

What learning spaces need to be designed in a new school today to remain current 30 years from now? The possibilities are endless and exciting. What often constrains one in thinking about possible ideas and solutions to future proof an educational environment is mental models embedded in a 20th century mode of education. This industrialist mentality thinks about traditional classroom structure, student ratios of 1:30, doors that close, 9.00-3.00pm timetable, libraries with books etc. How do we leave the past to think creatively about possibilities to enable learning like it hasn't been enabled before.
Maybe a starting point is to think about the types of learning that can occur in a day. For example one on one conferencing with a peer of the teacher, peer conferencing, small group teaching with the teacher, large group teaching, demonstration using visual media, independent study and focus time, social learning opportunities to collaborate on or off line to collectively work on a shared problem or opportunity.
How do we make the most of the indoor, out door learning flow? How can court yards be created to support learning? How might the furniture be designed to be multi-purpose in partitioning and storing, charging mobile devises?
The mind wants to wander ... Lots to think about in creating a learning organisation to support 21st teaching and learning. Am sure if I ask the kids they will have all the best ideas!
I guess the most challenging part is creating the 21st century pedagogy to match.
